Michael began a business career in Asia more than forty years ago, setting up and operating several companies in the F&B field. He currently maintains directorships of several food and entertainment outlets in China, notably the Zapata’s and JoJo’s Riverside groups.

In an expansion of his business activities, Michael set up Cottingham & Co. in 1992, and began importing alcoholic beverages into Taiwan. He grew Cottingham into a leading service provider for international premium beverage brands in Taiwan handling sales, distribution, marketing and brand development. Carlsberg became a partner in Cottingham in 2008, and the company was renamed Carlsberg-Cottingham. Carlsberg have since bought the company, renaming it Carlsberg (Taiwan).

Michael set up Cottingham (Shanghai) in 2010, and the company imports international brands into the vibrant China market, under the leadership of his son, Andrew. The focus is currently on Single Malt Scotch, principally Glenfarclas and Tomatin.

In Taiwan, the focus on importing and marketing international premium beverage brands continues with Cottingham Ltd, representing a Single Malt Scotch portfolio including Gordon & MacPhail, Douglas Laing, Edradour and Signatory. Cottingham are also sole agents for the Brown-Forman range comprising Jack Daniels, Tennessee Honey, Woodford Reserve, Early Times, Gentleman Jack, Herradura, El Jimador, Finlandia, and Chambord. Other brands include Paul John Indian Single Malt, Glencairn Glass, Dictador Rum, and Absente.

With more than thirty years of success in the Greater China alcoholic beverage industry, Michael was honoured to be inducted into the prestigious Keepers of the Quaich in 2012 for his services to the Scotch Whisky industry.
